Aabid Surti - Author, Painter & Cartoonist

AUTHOR
As an author his output has been prolific, his oeuvre spanning fiction as well as non-fiction, travelogue as well as children’s literature. He has written around 80 books till date, which have been translated into almost every Indian language.
Aabid Surti became an author by accident. When his first love broke due to family pressure, the teenaged Aabid had no one to confide in – so he began putting his story on paper. The story was published in Gujarati in 1965 as ' Tootela Farishta ' (Fallen Angels) and proved to be an unexpected success.
This led to a demand for more books, which ended as a prolific output of more than 80 books including 45 novels, 10 short story collections and 7 plays!
In 1975, his fictional version of the Devil’s Bible titled ‘The Black Book’ created a nationwide controversy, even amidst critical acclaim. It was translated into 7 languages and voted ‘The Book of the Year’ in Kannada.
The biographical novel ‘Musalman’ (Muslim) was the actual account of the author’s childhood in the poverty-ridden Dongri area of Mumbai, which was home to many underworld ganglords including Haji Mastan, Karim Lala and Dawood Ibrahim.
A collection of his short stories, titled ‘Teesri Aankh’, won the President’s Award in 1993.
With personal maturity, Aabid Surti’s writings have also become more socially conscious, reflecting the tumultuous times the country and the muslim community within it, is passing through. His last novel ‘Kathavachak’ (The Storyteller) is an unusual love story set against the backdrop of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya and the deadly riots that followed.
Aabid is also an accomplished playwright. ‘He is Radha,’ a comedy about a boy trapped in a woman’s body, has had more than 50 successful performances in India. He has also written more than half a dozen other plays, most of which have been translated onto stage in Hindi and Gujarati.
However, even this varied expression does not exhaust Aabid Surti, who also finds time to write Urdu poetry, Hindi film scripts and children’s books!

PAINTER
After his schooling, he joined the J. J. School of Arts and trained in Fine Arts. In 1958, He had his first solo exhibition of watercolour landscapes in Nainital. Since then, he has had had more than 15 Solo Exhibitions in many prestigious galleries in India and abroad.
The uniqueness of Aabid Surti’s style of painting is that he doesn’t have one.
“I don’t sell my signature, I sell my canvasses,” he says, and has steadfastly refused to be tied down to one style, no matter how successful. Through his career, he has experimented with many techniques including mirror collage, acrylic casting (transparent paintings) and body painting.
He has spent the last decade exploring yet another new medium to express his creativity – stained glass. “It’s a challenge to combine the traditional church art with modern architecture and find new ways of using glass to create textures of light and colour,” he says.
Aabid has created more than 200 designs for stained glass, most of which have been executed by Khandwani Studio in Mumbai for clients from different countries.

CARTOONIST As a child, Aabid Surti began drawing by copying cartoons from scraps of comic pages left by British troops passing through Bombay port during the Second World War.
Though he later created many local characters for newspapers in his youth, he developed his most successful character only after his marriage – the innocent yet shrewd simpleton Dabbuji. The weekly comic strip looked at the nuances of marriage and relationships.
At its peak, the weekly cartoon strip touched a circulation of more than four lakh copies and enjoyed a huge fan following which included former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, singer Asha Bhonsale and Osho, who often recounted Dabbuji jokes during his early Hindi discourses.
It was one of the longest running Indian comic strips, enjoying an unbroken run for more than 30 years in the Hindi literary weekly “Dharmayug”. At times, the popularity of this comic character often eclipsed Aabid’s fame as a serious painter and author!
Another comic book character created by Aabid, which enjoyed a huge popularity was Bahadur. Bahadur was the son of a bandit who helped the dacoit-ridden villages to set up their own self-defence system. Bahadur is currently under negotiation for a full-length Bollywood feature film.
Other memorable characters developed by him include Inspector Azaad, Inspector Vikram and Shuja.

Ashish Khatri - Study and the use Of Musa Paradisica

Study and the use Of   Musa Paradisica
My innovation
My innovation is about the “study and the use of Musa Paradisica (Banana Tree) fiber for making eco-friendly and cost effective products for mankind and there by create employments to rural and tribal people.
Impact on society
The textile industry is the second largest  Industry globally and the scope of employment is really big in this industry. Having Developed such a technology of developing From fibers, it will offer employment to a
Huge percentage of the Indian population. Banana plant is endowed with virtuous Fibers, which can be used to make good Apparels. Though, the plant is more popular For its fruit, it has been a source of high
Quality fiber which is used to manufacture Textiles. Waste materials extracted from banana Trees can also be a source of livelihood For the poor, rural and tribal population of The country.
The Spark
From childhood itself, I was interested in Science. Inventions always fascinated me and I did small works during that time itself. This invention was done by me when I was in 11th standard and I have a six year experience in this project. The idea of the invention came from “Garland Maker Women” and I started
working on it from 2005.
Your entrepreneurial journey
Understanding the importance of the Banana plant made me come up with such an idea. With the idea of doing something for the society, I started working on it for the past six years. For the last two years, I am
constantly trying to improve on this machine. In between, I faced many problems. No mechanic would have wasted their time to make a prototype of a single machine but I was still doing it. Firstly, I had made a
wooden model with the help of a carpenter but it was not working. But slowly people started recognizing my efforts and with an article being published on me faith was bestowed on me.
Association with TePP
I had asked for support from many firms but none came to help. Once I got to see an article on TePP in the local newspaper. The TUC Coordinator Dr. S.M. Mathur helped me and now my project stands up to the international level. Without their support my venture would not have attained the wings. The platform helped me a lot to realize my
dream.
Recognitions/awards
I have received a number of awards and prizes among which I am proud of being the recipient of the ‘Junior scientist of Rajasthan’, given by the former President, Dr. Kalam. I was also honored by the Government
of Rajasthan on Republic day in 2006. I also secured first position in the India International Rural Cultural Festival in the ‘Field of Science’ held by Ministry of Youth, India and also bagged the first position in
an exhibition organized by the Department of Science and Technology in 2006.
Future plans
To give employment to the people in need and to give some thing new to the textile industry. I have also started a society, MANN SOCIETY (Make Atmosphere Neat & Clean) and also a Chairman of BRO Banana Research Group.
Word of advice
I am totally inspired by our former President and his Vision-2020 like many others. My whole society team work is on his vision and I would advice new innovators to come and let us change the universe but maintain
the natural beauty of the universe.

Innovation philosophy
Make the universe creative, and save nature.

Mayank Walia - RRAT-Ramwal Reading Assistant Technology

Mayanak Walia - Inventions

Know more about Mayank walia  at   http://www.mayankwalia.com/

1. RRAT "Ramwal Reading Assiistant Technology" for blind or low vision persons
Supportive technology for reading is fundamental to meet individual education / knowledge requirements (in India specially) and improved educational outcomes for those who have reading based learning disabilities, are blind or have low vision. In today's scenario, most of the assistive reading technology in use consists of scanner and PC's with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology, which is expensive, bulky equipment and has not satisfying output.

2. Robot For Disaster ManagementDuring rescue operations for fire situation, cooperation is a must. In general, the problem is not solvable by a single agent and a heterogeneous team that dynamically combines individual capabilities in order to solve the task is needed. This requirement is due to the structural diversity of fire areas, variety of evidence of human presence that sensors can perceive and to the necessity of quickly and reliably examining targeted regions. This project, as a part of special project for fire occurring situations aims to extend the existing robotics and human interface technologies and to establish a novel human - machine interacting structure to enable effective use of semi-autonomous robots in place of humans for searching survivals from rubble under human remote instructions. Collaboration and coordination of the human and robot intelligence and skills are to be developed from both hardware and software view points to make the result of this project contribute to improvement of the search technology, an important issue in the robot-assisted search and rescue activities. This project is all about making a robot which navigates around the fire areas and perform the rescue operations.

3. 3s Agriculture
I invented "3S (Safe Secure Systematic) System" for sprinkling agrochemicals into the crop fields at large scale. I worked on this project by considering key feature i.e. Making a structure for a long term investment always proved positive for the progress of a farmer. I investigated many villages around the city and collected merits and demerits of the methods of using traditional and modern sprinkling of agrochemicals. Main objective is to providing effective methods of uniform distribution of agrochemicals, providing a systematic methodology i.e. less time consuming technique, prevention of bad effects of agrochemicals on the health of farmers & to the environment.

About Mayank Walia

From my childhood I had been interested on scientific based projects. When my classmates use to spend their time on their fun & enjoyment, I tried to know the professional techniques and mechanism required by National / International projects.

I didn't even get any technical support from my community to complete my projects at the beginning stage. When I was enrolled to class 9, I had invented a working prototype of a "Robot for Disaster Management" in India. This project was highly appreciated in my school and shown my existence in the field of creativity knowledge. Then when I moved to grade 10 I started working for NASA by working on project named ADWITYA SPACE SETTLEMENT, in which my Guru Mr. Navdeep Sharma guided me a lot. I visited Orlando, USA and gain lots of knowledge regarding confidential space science industry of America, met with senior astronaut Winston Scott,NASA. Before the ending of grade 10 also worked on a project named UTSDC (University of Toronto Space Design Contest) with other few participants from my school and got 2nd rank internationally & achieved “Overall Best Display” award by University of Toronto, Canada. My company "Space Venture" was to be the first Indian company recognized by University of Toronto in this contest. This achievement made my recognition in space science field and got opportunity to study in Toronto with good scholarship. But that was not just the end, in my grade 11 I again started working on the same project UTSDC for year 2009 and this time got honored for "Outstanding Performance".

In grade 12, I come to know about a contest Ignite-10 by NIF (National innovation foundation) and I started registering my entries ignite 2010, out of my 9 entries, 6 of them were accepted which proves the uniqueness  and innovativeness of proposals given by me. Among 2254 innovations my invention "RRAT" (Ramwal Reading Assistant Technology) was selected under senior category & well appreciated by NIF and I was honored by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on 8th of November 2010 at IIM Ahmadabad. When I met with Prof. Anil K Gupta, Vice Chair NIF, I volunteered for being ambassador of Punjab, to observing the establishment of IGNITE 2011 contest by NIF.

NIF has filed a patent for this innovation in my name under Govt. of India Patent Dept. NIF taking complete charge of putting my technology into product form and then they will support it to commercialization to international markets.
So if any new upcoming innovators have any innovative ideas or scientific thinking then I can help them to get register for a national or international contest as suited by the potential of the volunteer, so that they can have a chance to get national recognitions and awards like me because right guidelines & right directions always benefits us.
